A picture is worth a thousand words, but it can’t always do a feeling justice. Unless, of course, you’re Helena Christensen, who, for this issue’s photo diary, celebrates the experience of surfing by capturing the flowers and horses she meets en route to the beach. You can almost imagine her wandering down the beaten path, surfboard tucked under her arm…

“I always visualized surfing in my mind, being fascinated with the thought of gliding along perfectly shaped waves, submerged in green tunnels of roaring stillness, feeling the power of the ocean and a mix of inner triumph and humbleness towards nature. I finally had the courage to actually learn it in real life. And it felt exactly like I had imagined. For some reason the visuals of this experience are not of the ocean or surfers, maybe because it becomes almost impossible to convey in photos the feeling of this magic rush. Instead, the page is a mix of the horses and flowers I passed by every morning on my way down the little dirt road that led me to the beach in Costa Rica.” — Helena Christensen
